Normally an apprentice would be expected to attend college for a minimum 14 weeks in year one reducing to seven in year two and so on. Our pilot scheme reduces that amount of weeks to five in year one and one in year two, with the remaining weeks being site visits to assess the candidate on site.
If the candidate is meeting the criteria required through company site training he/she needs only attend the college five weeks, however if he is not meeting the standards he must return to college to achieve. This scheme has been very well received as it allows the companies to train their own staff, achieve full funding, providing they meet the standards required, failing to meet the standards results in the candidate having to attend college to achieve, (only what he/she would have been required to do so in any case under the old system)
The usual apprenticeship route is as follows:
- The apprentice is employed by a flooring company
- The company contacts Construction skills Inverness www.cskills.org/inverness
- The apprentice is enrolled on the floor covering courses
- Over the next year a total of 5 weeks are spent in college through block release. Periodic site visits take place to monitor the progress of the apprentice.
- End of year 1 candidate hopefully achieves standards met and progresses to level 3.
- Health and safety tests are taken and organised in College.
Feedback is always provided to the employer at the end of each block release. Feed back is very welcome indeed from the employer with regards the apprentice. If the employer would like special attention paid to a particular type of installation, eg seaming, welding etc every effort will be made to accommodate this.
